The overcoat I am getting is missing one of it's French cuffs - I was wondering if I should do anything about that, or just leave it as it is?

Coats
Overcoats are indeed very nice and still can be bought for lot less than uniforms now. I like the latewar pieces like your coat and Jeans. That is a nice picture of the artillery piece. They look very very cold. It must have been terrible to have been there fighting.

Yes ,I agree , overcoat are really nice , I still have about 20 of them.
They are harder to get these days , they were widely available 20 years ago , I guess 1000's of them fell victims of fakers , where did you think they got all that wool ? should be a crime , destroying such a nice piece of garnement .

As far as I am concerned, overcoats were worn in combat and so are just as interesting as a tunic, helmet, etc. I guess they are underrated becuae they take up to much room, and there are no insignia on them. Is Pierre Yves says, it is a crime to destroy these to make fake items with!
Karl, is there any story on your overcoat. With that type of repaire and the missing french cuff, it seems to me like it is probably a POW who did those repairs, or maybe a civilian. But you never know, maybe it was made in some russian izba buring the war. If you cnahge the repaire, then you will be sure that it is your repaire, not a watime repaire.
One thing is for sure, the way it is now shows the coats history, and as a collector, you shouldnt modify it.

Jean-Loup, good point. I don't like to buy items that people have put fake stuff on, and replacing that french cuff would be just that.
I would expect that if it was POW, it would have said PW on it in paint or something. But, since I don't have a story with it, it could be anything.
