      An 'Oberleutnant von Platen' was Chef of 6 (Reiter) Schwadron of II Abteilung of Kavallerie-Regiment Mitte in 1943.

            Nope, wrong Platen.

            This is Lt. Graf von Platen-Hallermund of 1./Aufklärungs Abteilung 2 (mot). with a seniority date of 1.9.1938 which fits with the August '38 date seen here.

            So armoured recce rather than cavalry.
            Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

              I find some imnformation about:

              Kampfgeschwader 54 "Totenkopf" - I. Gruppe - Gruppenkommandeure:

              26. Oktober 1941 Hauptmann Georg Graf von Platen.

              ...maybe a brother.

                  Nice one Simon ...I had my doubts as to whether or not I had the right man, as there was no nobility title preceding his name in 'Die Boeselagerschen Reiter'.
