facial hair

Interesting official short filml, as it shows the unsung hero's
who delivered the rations. My question is what was the german army
policy on facial hair. U-Bots crews apart, was it considered a must to stay
clean shaven even in the most extreme circumstances.
Those guys at the end, look to have had a real tough winter and most show
quite a few days of facial hair, rescued prisoners. ?

I read somewhere it had to be clean shaven so the gas mask would seal, but from photos it is obviously ignored often.

Don't forget U-boot crews, with serious beards and Gebirgjaeger with their famous Jaegerbart.

Hi John, Steve is correct about the regulations for shaving; it was to ensure an airtight fit of the respirator.

But in wartime, frontline, conditions, this order often had to be broken. Razor blades and even water were often in very short supply. Never mind the time involved when you were fighting for your life.

But you would not see a soldier in a rear area or occupation force sporting a beard.

Of course the Gebirgsjägers liked to sport their "Jägerbarts" and came up with solutions for wearing the Gasmask with a beard:






I think the caption on this photo sums it all up:

"Bearded and rough-and-ready, good natured and expressive, rebellious and loyal - this is the typical Gebirgsjäger. Always ready to risk his life for his mountain comrades."

I read somewhere years ago that the shaving regs were often relaxed for men who had sustained more serious facial wounds. I can remember seeing at least one photo of a soldier wearing a beard to help hide his scars.

It was also the fashion for young man in the 1930's in Germany to have no beard and/or moustache.
Take a look in periode picture albums if the soldier has pre army pictures in the album, you would have it difficult to find a young guy with a beard/moustache.
In WW1 a moustache was "in" according to fashion.
Similar for Belgium look at the difference in fashion between WW1 era soldiers and their sons in WW2.
And their was a real gas threat in WW1.

The photo was taken in Nikopol, Ukraine in December 1943.
