Revising this thread to show my 3 Nebelwerfer straps. These were all from the same unit and were taken in and/or around Koblenz on 17 March 1945. Shortly after the 345th Infantry crossed the Mosel River, stiff German resistance was met as the 345th moved to enter and secure Koblenz. These three straps were taken from soldiers manning a MG nest that had my father and few others pinned down for 4 hours until being taken out. This is documented in his diary. The German 54th had also taken part in the Battle of the Bulge and I believe these forces were still being pushed back as the Americans pushed through Germany.

What is very interesting is the difference in all three of the straps; different tress design and colors, different pips, and different size, shape, and metal makeup of unit cyphers - both aluminum and nickel.

          Enjoy the photos.

Here are some of mine including a 54 set. The 101 boards did indeed turn out to be Army, I pulled them apart enough to see they were made from modern cardboard. 101 Nebel WH was a Normandy unit so all is well. The board itself and numbers appear original although the retaining strap has been removed.

Very nice board (is it a set?), the "L" would also have been worn earlier by members of the Nebel-Lehr- und Versuchs-Abteilung begining in October of 1936 as well as Cadre of the different schools for Nebel branch, the Heeresgasschutzschule, (Nebel-) Versuchsstab, and training units for NCOs and Officers in Celle and later Bromberg etc. begining about the same time circa 36/37. The Lehr Rgt.s were combat units but the training units also continued to wear the "L" throughout the War.

                              All,

Very nice and varied straps being shown.

John - interesting to see your 54th set! Is there any provenance on yours?

No, sorry, they are slip ons and came on a named Nebel tunic from a dealer but that man was never in the 54th. One interesting thing to note is the difference in the surface colors of the two numbers, just a manufacturing difference in quality. I see this a lot but they are period.
