    Mystery tunic

    Hi all,
Does anyone recognise this style of tunic? Although it has labels for 51 it could be old stock. The eagle is a recent addition and can be dismissed.
There is no piping on the shoulder straps and the bronze fronted buttons are by Friedrich Linden of Ludenscheid.
On the label is BAOR ----British Army of the Rhine ---Where do they come in?
There was no German army in 51 and no German government either. So who was it for? A real mystery.
    Cheers Franco

Maybe BAOR Security or Labor Service?

                    Hi Franco,

                    Nice tunic!

The cut of this tunic is of a traditional German style and it bears many of the features of the open color style tunics worn by the German Police and Labor Services during the war.

I think this tunic was likely fabricated in 1951, as dated but for use by the German Civilian Labor Group Forces which augmented the BAOR in that period.

There was also a US counterpart of these forces which trace their lineage to units of the German Wehrmacht which were retained in service after the end of the second world war.

FYI - the Federal Republic of Germany was established in 1949 and the Bundesgrenzschutz (as a forerunner of the Bundeswehr) in 1951.

The Bundeswehr officially came into being in 1955 with the transfer of 55,000 members of the Bundesgrenzschutz to the new German Armed Forces.

                    Chao,

                    Diane

Hi Franco, Diane is correct. We have discussed these tunics in the British & Commowealth forum too. Sadly I have no pics of these in wear, but I have seen some in the past.

Obviously the eagle is a repro, someone has added to try and make it look "WW2".

                        Cheers, Ade.

Interesting buttons as well, in between an early ss crackle finish, and a typical heer pebbled finish..
