Shoulder Board / Stalingrad Cross Emblem

Unsure of rank and what the Stalingrad cross means, can any one shed some light? I bought this from a friend’s private collection. The first photo was taken with flash, that’s why it’s washed out. The cross has an eagle and reads Stalingrad under it, has better detail in person. Thanks in advance.

Hi, All I can tell you is Badges and Insignia of the Third Reich 1933-45 by Brian L. Davis Shows on plate 61 item 5 Quote "The Hoch and Deutschmeister Kruez, normally found mounted on shoulder-straps of personel from the Grenadier-Regiment 'Hoch and Deutschmeister' was also used as a semu-official cap insignia, by both regular and replacement battalion troops" unquote. same book plate 9 item 15 shows the same shoulder strap as yours with the cross and 1 pip.says shoulder strap for a LT from above regiment. I hope that helps a little.

You might want to look at these past threads. If you do a search you might find some more as well.

Hard to say from your pictures but I have my doubts about your cross. Possibly it is genuine and is misleading due to the toal total lack of finish, again, it is hard to say. I have four genuine examples and they are quite identical. Give me a few minutes and I will but one (on a shoulderstrap) on my scanner and hopefully give you a nice pic for comparrison.

Sorry, I tried to get a better shot my self but couldn't get it. The finish is worn off. Thanks again

I've learned to use my scanner tonight! One last scan, on 800 resolution.

Heres a comparison of your piece (in the middle), with a known copy (on the left) and a textbook original(on the right). I have several of the style that Will shows, but many consider them to be controversial. From the poor picture yours has more in common with the known copy IMHO. However that could be poor photography. You should be able to compare it with the pic and make a determination. Hope this helps.WR Jim
