Artillery Officer's Schiffchen - Opinions Please!

    Greetings Everyone.

Would you uniform folks be kind enough to give your blessing on this cap? This is way out of my territory. The picture makes it look more grey-green, but out in the sun it is clearly grey. The eagle is silver thread on a green backing.

No markings on the inside other than "58" which I assume is the size. Nothing under the sweat band and no stamping anywhere I can see.

Any help in authenticating this piece greatly appreciated.

    All the best,

    Dan.

Looks like a nice M38 schiffchen.

      Hello Dan

I Could be wrong, but that sort of metal cocarde was not standard, but rather a sort of tailor/field-added piece, no?. Are there any traces of stitchings of a previous cocarde?

Also it seems in mint un-issued condition. Now, if the owner put up that cocarde during it's wear, you expect at least some kind of traces?

      just my 2 cents worth

      Greetings

      Jan

        Question mark

        I notice some strange things:

        1) it looks very new (but you can judge it better when you see it real life).
        2) it has no little holes with a metal round at the side to let it breathe. All I caps I see do have this.
        3) The metal cocarde was used at the first model (1934) but then the cap had two buttons at the front.

        Just my thoughts.

          Cockade

          Hello Everyone!

The Schiffchen in the sunlight is more grey than green as the photo would show. The soutache??, the red upsidedown "v" is handsewn, and the metal cockade appears to be done by a tailor. It shows extremely fine workmanship all over and cannot see where there was ever a cloth covering rather than the metal button was ever there. The side cap belonged to a Swedish man who served in the German Artillery I am told. But yes, it exhibits the finest workmanship....far better than many other uniform pieces I have seen. I am constantly impressed over the workmanship that went into especially the officer uniforms.

Also I know of this side cap with the vent holes. But this one seems to be earlier production??

          Many thanks,

          Dan.
