I'm pretty new and this is just conjecture but...

Having the litzen be branch specific surely caused difficulties in supplying tunics. Your photo pretty much proves that soldiers were occasionally supplied with tunics that had incorrect color litzen. I would guess the switch to a general litzen was at least in part prompted by this situation. It would seem logical then that after the switch, soldiers that had been supplied with an incorrect color litzen would then change them to the general litzen if possible. Even if they weren't ordered to do so, it seems possible that an individual soldier would do it if he had been given a hard time about having the mixed insignia at some point in the past.

Wonderful item that would certainly be dismissed as being "put together" post-war without the photo. A lesson for us all!

The Tunic came from the family but they would not give his name the photo was pulled from the album, they did not want his name known, pherhaps in a roundabout way i'll find out one day.

                        Servus Merdock,

I was looking again through your post of this fantastic tunic and photo. The back of the photo reads "Fotohaus Schmidt, Lofer (bei Salzburg, Austria)." I use to ski there when I lived in München.

Simply amazing! You should take that photo to a professional photo/printing place. They could probably print a copy that has been 'touched up' to releive the creases and scratches on the original. You should frame it and hang it on a wall next to the tunic!

Again, amazing tunic. I especially like how you have photographic reference to the tunic, and its owner.

                          -Brendan

Very true, at least by a large number of responders. I would have presented the tunic in great detail.Received the responses and then posted the photo. It would have been a great teaching tool.

Precisely. This just goes to show a tunic that isn't 100% "by the book" isn't necessarily fake. Definitely a lesson for us all to learn.
