Its worth mentioning that late in the war, when the Germans were.... well... making...um... tacticle withdrawls on all fronts, there was no need for recon units and these were then renamed Fusillier abt. and were used as kind of a rapid stopgap force.
So late recon jackets are more likely "fusillier" jackets.

Max Fabich when he commanded the Fus. regt of the Panzer Korps GD had yellow gold piping on a Stug. wrapper.

            hi Chris,

chapter 6 of field uniform of german army panzer forces inWWII
by michael pruett and Robert Edward has a detail
description of recon (aufklarungs-abteilungen) battalions in late
            war.

            quoted from pruett's
            =================
            regarding late war recon activities
            ---------------------------------------
            page 136,

            1)
... The branch color of aufklarungs-abteilungen was
officially change to golden yellow once more on
            29 November 1944....

            page 137

2)almost every divisions panzer aufklarungs-abteilungen had somethign unique about it...
.. many (aufklarungs-abteilungen ) crews did not begin to
receive the panzer denim uniforms unitl much later in the war. for instance, panzer aufklarungs-abteilungen -14 was issues the light grey panzer denim uniform in 1943.....
Oberwachtmeister Wilhelm Kessel awarded knight cross on 23 feb 1944 (page 138)

            3) page 135
The armoured reconnaissance were the eyes and ears of the panzerleichte and panzer grenadier-division. They filled a number of roles:covering force, screening, economy of force and general reconnaissance. In short they inherited the mantle of cavalry...page (135), Grobdeutschland recon/ panzer aufklarungs-abteilungen whose half track crew were not issued the sturmartillerie uniform until jan 1944.

I do know they were wearing Recon uniform throughtout the war but as you said,
They might have a different role/assignment during
            the late 1944-1945.

            regards
            ken

I cant find the exact reference, but I think it refered to Recon units in Infantry divisions that became Fusilier abteilungs at Divisional level. These had Golden yellow.

By GD you must be careful not to confuse the white piping of the Panzer Fusillier Regt GD of the GD division (the Regt that was there for the whole war) and the short lived Panzer Fusillier Regt of the Panzer Korps GD which had Golden Yellow.

              All the best
              Chris

                thanks Chris.

anyway, is the term Fusilier = sturmartillerie ?

                regards

                  Hi,
                  No Sturmartillery.
The Divisions Fuesilier Abt have their roots in the bicycle units, some through Kradschuetzen, then changing into Aufklaerungs abt and later in the war into Fuesilier units, ie. highly mobile light infantry. These all had gold yellow all the way through. I am sure one of the panzer guys can say what kind of vehicules they may have had.

These are not to be confused with Fuesilier regts that were renamed from infantry regts into Fuesilier reg in 1942-43, as these had white piping and had been, and stayed regular infantry, just with a snazzy name.
