    recon tab

I have a very worn, soiled single panzer recon tab.I am trying to ascertain wether or not it is genuine. The original golden yellow piping has changed colour to a golden orange. You can see the original colour if you lift the piping and look underneath. The skull is a silver washed brass type which ive been told is consistent with the cav/recon style.
Can i send someone some snaps of the front and rear/also the piping lifted where the original colour is visible,so they can post them on here?I just cant seem to find many examples of this type(plenty of pink panzer though),to draw an accurate comparison with.

    Much appreciated

I would like to thank Adrian very much for posting the pics.It is refreshing to see another collector going out of his way to help another.Once again adrian, thank you,and i owe you a favour.

The tab was given to me by a fellow collector many years back, but ive never bothered till now to look heavily into it.
As you can tell, the piping has discoloured to a golden orange(oxidization perhaps?it is also very soiled. The top pic shows the original colour once the piping is lifted. The piping is is from all the descriptions i have read the corded variety, which i believe is consistent with recon tabs(similar to political piping,i think). The totenkopf is a bit more detailed than appears in the snaps(crappy scanner),and is brass alloy(early?) based with a silver wash(heavy black patina in low spots and crevices). It also matches most cav/recon style ones ive seen. The centre black base was originally wool but has worn heavily leaving the base nap visible in most place. The rear buckram is treated but not as dark as most panzer tabs ive seen.It is more the colour of a lot of Luft assault gunner tabs.

I feel it looks ok,but i would like the more experienced to comment!

          regards keifer

From the scans it appears original to me. The construction method and type of materials used are correct. I think that the skull is also good, although it's hard to tell for sure from the scan.

Hi Kiefer, I feel sure that your Panzer collar tab is original. The construction is all correct and the wear and colour look consistant with it being old. The deathsheads are often tricky to decide about, as they are so many different makers, all with slightly different pins and details to the skull.
                Cheers, Ade.

Keifer asked that I too take a look at the recon tab and I can only agree with the above views that it is a perfectly original example. Nice find Keifer!

                    Cheers, Wade K.

Very cool ken.You are one lucky man.
I just wish i had a wrapper to go with my tab.

                          one day maybe......................

Would anyone like to see some black piped pioneer tabs for the felgrau wrapper?I think they are fairly uncommon and might be of interest to some who havent seen them.
Can i send someone some snaps?

                          regards keifer
