SS Runes on totenkopf uniforms

Hi all,

Sorry if this question has appeared before and forgive my lack of knowledge on this, but was wondering if anyone can tell me the reason that in certain pictures of known totenkopf soldiers, are they wearing ss rune collar tabs?
I have seen "studio" photos of both KC winners Fritz Christian and Ernst Staudle with the ss rune collar tabs just wondering why this was.

The members of TK regiment "Thule" wore runic collar tabs for unknown reasons.
