I just aquired an officers EREL marked peaked visor cap with dark green piping. Not sure if it is Admin. or Mountain Troop. It is in beautiful shape on the outside with a superb makers label. This is the question. Who ever brought it bach must have put it in the bottom of their seabag because the headband is crushed in at the side buttonns and the sweatband is flaking away and not stitched at the rear. Is there any way of restoring it back to its original beauty? It lookks great on a styro. head but, when you take it off, it folds in half. Should I just leave it? HELP!

Hi Tom, it could be possible to restore it, just depends on how skilled you are with a needle and thread. Why not post some photos of it on the headgear forum so we can see how bad a shape it's in.

I have a nice Clemens Wagner with the exact same problems. Personally I would just leave it be. I consider damage like that to be part of the caps history.Comment

I disagree, if you can return it to it's former glory by just re-attaching the loose parts, I say go for it. You can also re-shape the cap by "steaming it" . PM me if you want to know more.Originally posted by NTZ

Thanx guys. Both replies are valid. Sorry Ben, I may not post pictures. The age old question has always been (with anything), " Restore or not to restore?" The other thing I am concered with as far as tampering with it is will I hurt the resale value if I choose to pass it on some day. As it stands, It's a beautiful hat on the outside and a striking diamond on the inside. I was lucky to get it. Any more input would be appreciated. It would be nice to see pictures of period hat manufacturing if they exist.Comment
