    Short Tresse

Hello guys, first time post, please be gentle with me.
Recently brought circa 1943 book, Infantrie im Osten. Many close ups
of German troopers who invaded Russia, 64yrs to the day.
( sad to think most were dead by the time this book was printed )
The only named photo shows a knight cross winner, I would like to know
what became of him. On the uniform side, is the short tresse unusual? it
does not look like the picture was doctored? but shoulder straps do not
appear to have tresse, but a pip or numeral.

Header reads as follows. FELDWEBEL OTTO ESKE Zugfuhrer in einem
pommerschen jagerbattalion fand am 8. November 1941 an der spitze
    seines Zuges den heldentod.

    Cheers.......... PICTURE TO FOLLOW

If Otto Eske is the Knights Cross winner, the text says that he "fell (died ) a Heroes Death at the head of his company on 8 Nov 1941"
