    Fake Flakhelferin Armband

Just got this armband and she failed the blacklight test. Just wanted to let folks know in case they start hitting the market in numbers.
    Regards,
    Marc

        Hello Marc,

If that armband is a fake, it's one that has been around for a long time. This armband is not a new fake that will be flooding the market soon. Over the years that I have been collecting, I have occasionally seen this type of armband at shows. I have probably seen five or less of these armbands over the course of almost thirty years of collecting. In my collecting experience, this armband has been a scarce thing to see at shows. It never appeared in any great numbers to the point where I became suspect of them. I don't think we will see a rash of these in the future either. A friend of mine owns an armband just like the one you posted. I haven't seen the armband nor my friend for about ten years now, but I still remember the armband and the day it was purchased. He bought it in 1978 at a gun show in Lorain, Ohio. The armband was white cotton, with the same tighter weave that yours displays along the top and bottom edges of the band The insignia was embroidered in gray cotton thread. I don't believe we ever blacklight tested it though. I'm not saying that your armband is real, but I wouldn't pass it off as fake too quickly. I've heard that some original items glow under blacklight, and that sometimes an original item might glow if it has been washed. Blacklight test alone should not be considered 100% conclusive I'm told. Hopefully other collectors have seen these armbands over the years and will offer their opinions as well. What glows on your armband? Is it the white fabric, the grey thread, or everything?
        Best regards! Tom

The threads that connect the patch to the armband glow.

Did such an armband even exist? In all my Flakhelferin pics I have not seen this one...

              Hello Marc,
I wish I knew the answer to this question. I know that the female flak helpers used the flying eagle superimposed over a sword insignia. It was in patch form worn on the right sleeve of their uniform. Since the patch did exist, I think it is possible that an armband existed as well, maybe for the helpers that were without the official uniform. I have never seen any photographic evidence of this armband being worn either, but I can also say that about alot of other types of armbands as well. I really don't know what to think about these so I'm hoping some other collectors will chime in.
              Best regards! Tom

                Hello Marc,
Just to clarify though, that insignia is embroidered directly onto the white band isn't it? Or is the insignia a separate "patch" which is sewn to the white band? On the one my friend has, the insignia is embroidered directly onto the band and not a separate sewn-on patch. Could you post a clear picture of the insignia, front and back, without the blacklight?
Thank you & best regards! Tom

I have seen this same exact type of glowing on definitely original embroidered items. I think it is very likely that this is a genuine piece.

Maybe they had "Deutsche Wehrmacht" armband. You know the yellow one.

                        Hello Paul,
I have never seen this band with blue embroidery on white, only the gray on white ones. Interesting that you have a name associated with these armbands. Who is this guy Tony Oliver? Was he a big time armband forger? Is he still around? Thanks for the assistance.
                        Best regards! Tom
PS: If you locate your example of this armband, could you please post some pictures?

Yes - they were great! Full refund no questions. They had done blacklight on the front only - no one is perfect!

Hi Tom, Tony Oliver is still around. I see him at a couple of shows a year here in the UK, usually Birmingham and Beltring. He was one of the first big time fake makers here in the UK back in the 1970's. I bought several of his products back then His fake SS belt buckles are very well known. He put his initials on the back and his phone number as a makers code. They still fool people today. But he is no longer engaged in this trade as far as I know now? He is a military vehicle enthusiast and has collected MV's for many years. He used to hire them for use in movies, in fact he still does. He supplied many vehicles for the film "Battle of Britain" all those years ago.

Hi Marc, good news on the refund

                              Cheers, Ade,
