          The best way to tell is that the embroidery style and materials used is consistent with originals. The white eagle on dark green wool base cloth is typical of early, pre-war enlisted eagles.

          This specific style of eagle that your friend has is actually a pretty common eagle to find and I've seen dozens of them still in their original bundles. The reproductions of the early machine embroidered eagles are, for Heer and KM at least, relatively easy to spot. The Luftwaffe ones are much more difficult (for me) to identify.
