                        Pz wrap

I realize that you did not ask for opinions, but if I was you I would return it...assuming that you bought it as an original.

Sorry but just because the zig-zag is not widely spread apart does not mean it is bad. Depending on the factory and date of manufacturer they vary greatly. Take the Von Beschwitz wrap on this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...0&page=2&pp=15 go to image #19 and tell me if this would pass the same test?

                          Just an observation. Wade K

                            Hi there,

just racing off to visit my mother in hospital.....but I can tell you that this wrap was purchased from Herr Richard Kindel who is historian and head of the traditionsverband for the 8th panzer division. It was purchased in Kassel in 2000 from him. Here is his book on the division: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ghlight=kindel

There are lots of fakes with wide zig-zag also....but this means nothing......I believe this wrap is fine. I might add that the pictures don't do it justice....the wool is that lovely heavy pre-war quality and the lining feels like pyjama fabric it is so soft....very nice quality.
                            Cheersm, must fly. Wade K.

It is often difficult to evaluate an item, especially a black cloth uniform item, from pictures alone. Regardless of where the wrap came from I still question many characteristics that it appears to have based on the photos. The close zig zag stitiching is the least of them too me, however it appears even more excessive than the von B. collar.

The collar and lapels seem out of proportion for one thing. The collar having a very non-standard shape and size for a 2nd style wrap and the lapels seem very narrow in width. The wrap may have been re-tailored in this area to more resemble the 1st style...and I would not doubt that this was sometimes done. If it is original the collar piping was probably added as I personally don't believe that factory piping will be found on post 39 dated wraps ( I feel it was dropped from factory application during the year 39) and if the collar was re-cut it would of course had to be re-applied anyway, assuming one believes that it was factory applied in 1940.

The material may be high quality as you say, but it is very non typical for fabric used in military contract wraps...which the markings in this one present it to be. The linning material is also of a weave and type that I have never seen in a contract wrap, or otherwise for that matter. The piping also looks strange in that it does not seem to be either woolen, rayon or tight weave wool based cord as found on political tabs of the 30's , but also sometimes used on PZ tabs.

Normally I would expect to find a makers name on a wrap dated 1940. The belt hook straps appear to be very narrow as well, but this may be an illusion caused by the photo angle. In general I don't care for the look of the breast eagle or the tabs. The wear or dirt that seems to be on the wrap is inconsistant with the near new look of the breast eagle and the linning...based on the photos again.

In my experience it is extremely uncommon to find non-black fabric used in the cuff button tab on a black wrap, even more so an early one.

That deal with the thousand stitches used on the lower underside of the collar is IMO not factory and something that I saw on the similar fakes that were very much around 10 to 12 years ago...mostly marked with a Wien makers address/mark. Actually many of the characteristics that I have mentioned on this wrap can be found on these 12 year old Wien fakes.

Having said all of the above, I will say that this wrap may be a period piece, but it would get a lot of very careful study from me if it was in my possesion.

Through the ink stamp size and depot markings it presents itself as an issue/contract wrap. However, it shows many aspects that are not typical or in some cases ever found on such contract wraps from the period in which it is dated. Some of these may be explained due to period alteration as it is an officer's used wrap.

I would simply recommend that a carefull evauluation be made of this wrap.
