    Tropical Greatcoat Straps

    Hi Team,
    I was recently fortunate to obtain this set of Motorized Infantry straps and wanted to share their special feature of an uncommon tongue underlay material.
    Standard in every other way, they show a lot of upper panel sun fade, as does the piping.
    Regards from New Zealand
    Mark.

    Hello Mark,

    sorry for my delay in replying to you. I have been looking at these for some time now. For me, I am picking up several red-flags so I am giving them

    However, it will be intereting to see what others think,

      Hi Mark

      Interesting set of overcoat straps. Is that blue LW material for the tongue underside ? Am seeing the fading, but not the wear and use ? buttonholes etc

      One thing i have learned over the years is that coat straps "in hand" reveal much more when compared to photos. While DAK tunic straps are easier to distinguish the details from photos without the benefit of a hands on.

      Our tropical strap/coat faker has one problem in that it is difficult to find the proper brown wool these days unless he cuts up an overcoat.
      Which would furnish enough wool for a Regts. worth of straps

      cheers

      Tim

        Thank You Chris and Tim for your posts. I'll contact Chris to talk further regarding his concerns, but just at this point I'll add that these straps have been in one collection for decades - so are not in any way connected to any new generation fakes.
        Their aging just isn't captured well by my poor photography.
        Cheers!

            Thanks Mark

            Did not mean to imply these were from the current generation of fake tropical coat/straps. Have seen the blue material used on the underside before on coat straps. Is it LW blue scraps?

            Your photos are excellent.
            You will remember a set of DAK Oberfeldwebel Schutzen overcoat straps that actually were Stabfeldwebel,
            missing a pip on each coat strap that could not be told from the photos but only "in hand."

              The cotton piping is unlike anything else I have seen on a known original tropical shoulder straps. The Germans ran out of Cotton quickly in 1939 and were using blends. Yet here we are with basically what is cotton or a high percentage cotton-blend piping on what purports to be a later tropical great-coat strap ???

              This strange type of strap with a multi-part underside have been around for a long, long time i.e. 1970's 1980's ?. And always rare desirable straps SS, GD, tropical, no run of the mill WH or LW

              Here is a GD example made by them. Several red-flags here too in my opinion,

                However, I have come across an SS officers shoulder board with this type of Cotton-blend piping that I can not fault. It was discussed here;

                http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=997830

                Thus I am open to what other think/ experienced about the piping. But there are other things that I do not like about the tropical great-coat and GD shoulder straps,

                  Another tropical strap thread with this type of high cotton content piping emerges on WAF ;

                  http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru....php?t=1040357

                  I have no problem with pre-war and early SS/ Political but I do not like tropical, Waffen SS and GD with this type of piping,

                      The last strap with "I" button is an immediate dud, the "GD"s are as well, the SS officer boards clearly original, but I'm just not a fan of the overcoat pair. The wool looks, as Tim noted, like it needs an in-hand inspection which I don't think would lead to a positive result from these images.

                        Were these tropical overcoat straps submitted for comment on this forum at an earlier date? I feel as though I offered a (negative) opinion at that time.
