More from the vet on the where, when,
and how obtained would be of interest.
Something sadly lost as items change
hands. Likewise, I note the top has short
legs, which I've wondered the meaning of?

I wonder if the early DE eagles had the long or the short legs?
Obviously there was a change in design for aesthetics value for a reason.

Wow! I've owned that book ever since it came off Roger Bender's press (so to speak) and I've never noticed that difference from the front to the back cover!! You're the man, OFW!!

        Cheers,

The shorter legs were probably to remedy the legs breaking and cracking issue often seen. So it would make seance the shorter legs are later.

Interesting! Didn't notice that until now and I agree with Bill that a likely reason was to reduce fracture or cracking of the legs. Initially I thought it was just the angle of the camera.

Before jumping into hasty conclusions, I believe the DE top on the front and back cover of the book are one and the same.
The back cover photo is probably photoshopped because it is missing the complete tail!

..or taken at an angle so the tail isn't visible?

This question seems easy enough to resolve, especially since Ulric of England is still apparently alive and operating his website business. The question appears innocuous enough to raise with Ulric directly and his website offers a phone number to use. I wonder whether anyone among us in the UK could ring him up and ask him if the eagle on both covers of his 1997 book are different examples or are they the same bird from slightly different angles?

Roger Bender, the publisher of that book, also provides photo illustration service for some of his authors to supplement their texts. If Ulric has no answer then we can certainly call Roger directly and ask him. But it seems logical to ask the author first.

The missing tail one is probably the one at page 391 owned by Ulric . Probably due to this damage so better to show a the complete one on the cover .

....but my copy's rear cover clearly shows a tail present on that pole top.

                            Hi,

a (mostly hidden) tail is visible in the back cover like robs said.

There is a long leg version and a short leg version.
