What kind of flag is this?

    Greetings-

I'm not a collector of TR flags, so please pardon my questions about this flag. I was just offered this flag by a friend of mine who has a co-worker whose father supposedly brought it back from the War. The person owning it wants to part with it, and I happen to be the only militaria collector that they know.

But my problem is.... What kind of flag is this? It's a big flag - it appears to be about a little under 2m wide by 3m long. I am generally familiar with the common German flags from WW2, but this is the first I've ever seen this type.

Any clues as to what it is, and second of all, any clue how much I should offer this guy for it? It appears to be in pretty decent shape.

    Thanks!

Hi Dave, it is a nice original State Service Flag. The Reichsdienstflagge. Used on civil admin buildings, railways, etc. There was one on the E Stand the other day. I would say $450.

    Cheers, Ade.

I saw another one for $295. In good shape dealers usually ask in the neighborhood of $400. I'm hoping to find one from a vet myself. Good luck!

If I get it, it will be for sale as I don't collect TR stuff. So, you may be in luck!

          Dave,

I've owned several of these, and the $300-$450 price range is correct, depending on condition. Check yours if you can get it for mothing or tears. The cloth Hamburg maker tag is a real bonus too. Seen those tags on Nazi party flags, but first time on a State Service.

Great piece of history, as many consider this the most attractive of the normally seen 3rd Reich flags. One final thought, you can get good money for this flag, so treat the vet's son fairly in your offer!!

Just heard back from the guy. Asking price? $1000!

Guess I won't be picking up this one!

Thanks for all your help though!

That is very typical. Flags were one of the most common war souveniers but vets and their families always over estimate their worth for some reason. I think it is because they are so visually striking...

Andy is correct, it's one of the most difficult items for me to buy from the veterans family. You can get a real nice '3X'4 NSDAP flag from a dealer for $150, veteran family members just can't believe they're only worth that..
