    Opinions Flag with Brown Swastika

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ictureid=13798

This banner is double sided and everything is hand stitched. The Swastika is BROWN and you can faintly see lines where they laid it down to line it up prior to sewing. I was wondering if this was an early banner made prior to them designing the flag in black? Is it German made? The entire banner is hand stitched. Someone mentioned it could be an Italian Made or German American Bund flag? I have more pics. The banner is about 9 Feet long and about 3 1/2 feet wide.

Does anyone have opinions exactly what this flag is and what it may be worth?

I have many more pics i can email or I have 3 more on my profile page. There is also a Nazi stamp on it.

    Thank you,
    CHarles

I have viewed your profile pics of the posted flag
Maybe the swas has faded to a brownish colour? Does the red field look sun bleeched?
Can you make out any of the wording on the ink stamping?
          Thanks.

This is a classic case of dye fading. The swastika may appear brown now but it was originally black.

In any case, it is an interesting early narrow swastika flag. From the dimensions given, it sounds like a window or pole banner that would be hung vertically. A clearer photo of the stamp would be interesting to see. I've posted the one you have on your profile but rotated. It appears to read "Kreis Sparkasse Alte????" That would be a county savings bank in the city of Alt??? Maybe it's Altenburg, a city in Thueringen; or Altenkirchen in the Rheinland-Pfalz district. Both were liberated by US forces in Spring 1945. The prefix "Alten-" is a common one for German city and town names so it could be another place entirely. If this came out of a GI's estate, perhaps you can determine his unit and could place it in one or the other at the end of the war.

German American Bund flags in the National Flag style were often of German origin, purchased there by traveling Bund members. I've never seen a narrow swastika Bund flag. I think by the time the Bund was formed in the mid-1930's, the narrow style was obsolete.

Here's a picture of a savings and loan bank in another location showing a similar flag (but with the typical width swastika) displayed vertically.

I agree, the black to brown dye fade is typical. It may not even be from sun exposure, some dyes may simply age this way.

I agree that this started out life as black.

I have a couple that have done almost the exact same thing.
