I have the oppertunity to get this KM penant, which is a vet bringback from Italy. (alledgedly) Can anyone tell me more about it. What it represents, is it even original and what is a fair value to offer for it? Many tnax. Jacques

IMO a Flotilla Commanders pennant, as flown on larger vessels of
various types in German Navy formations, including minesweeping
and laying, coastal convoy protection, anti-sub, barrage breaking,
port accesses, smoke-laying to hide ports, port net tenders, and
other harbor protection unit commanders. There were ~9 hp flotillas
in Belgium & France alone, and more elsewhere such as in Italy, etc.
Noticed via Google search, a rarer size ~18" X 28" listed at $550 USD.

Hi Jacques,
Unless you were able to talk directly to the vet as to when and where he captured it I doubt you will ever know the flottilla. They were not marked with any unit designation unless done locally. As OFW said, they came in different sizes and this seems a larger size. The thing is that there were not many units larger than a S or R or U boat in the Med. by virtue of having to go through the Straights on the surface vs. floating under on the currents or being transported overland and/or down rivers. Any units organized into flottillas could use this flag and I have seen the smaller ones on S-boats in photos. I also know of one flag that came directly from an officer that was a flottilla commander before being "promoted" to a staff position and when he left his unit he was given the flag to take with him. So they all don't have to have come off of a ship or boat. What ever the history behind it, this is still a nice flag for the KM collector.

KM flag use ID ???

where one can identify this spesific penant, eg what flottila it was
used by? J
IMO all KM vessels had these in their flag lockers,
and also in KM port facility storage, so specific use
would not normally be identifiable. This is especially
the case for mint condition examples, i.e., not having
actually been flown or used in at sea service. Rarely,
sometimes worn & presented flags were crew marked
for commemoration or command change presentation.
