It appears to be a good original. Incorrectly described as a "Gefolgschaftsfahne" this is actually the Bannfahne of the Bann. Much more rare.

      Hello TOMEGA:
IMO, appears to be a nice original HJ Bann fahne.

      OFW
(below) listed as ...Ref #: C-MFBP-1
RARE HITLER YOUTH BANN 238 KLEVE-GELDERN
      RUTH NIEDERRHEIN WEST. (Gefolgschaft Fahne)
      "Historical background:
During the Third Reich the Nazi Party (NSDAP) had numerious organizational
flags.HJ unit flags existed in company, battalion, and regiment level. "The
highest level of [the] HJ organisational flag" being the Bann eagle pattern.
"Each Bann had only one of these flags and it normally resided in the Bann
Headquarters." HJ membership could begin at age 14, by assignment to a
Gefolgschaft (company), the smallest unit of about one hundred kids - there
were thousands of Gefolgschafts with corner patch flags. Each HJ Bann had
several Gefolgschaft within it, with the number of Gefolgschaft within a Bann
seemly depend on location. For example Bann number 28 (Koblenz and
Mittelrhein) had 19 Gefolgschaft numbers. Confusion exists as some Banns
were later renumbered, and only the lower number Banns were associated
with the traditions of the old Kaiser era regiments . In 1936 there were 368
Banns, in 1937 480 Banns, and 945 by 1945. Many HJ unit flags were presented
at the Reichsparteitag in Nürnberg by Baldur von Schirach. The first 200 or 300
maybe, perhaps more, corresponded to the old Regiments of the Kaiser era, for
example Bann 1 was Konigsberg in East Prussia. After they ran out of regimental
numbers, they had no further system of assigning the Bann numbers.
      Description:

This is a very, very rare parade standard for Hitler Youth Bann 238 Kleve-Geldern
/ Ruhr-Niederrhein/ West. Very few (less than 10) are known to have survived.
This flag has three equal height horizontal stripes (red, white, red), and is made
of cotton bunting material. In the center is an embroidered outstretched-winged
eagle (in black) holding a sword (left in white) and hammer (right in black). Above
the eagle is a three part scroll (in white) with the numbers 238 (in black) on the
center pannel. The flag has the unique embrodered feather zig-zag lines as seen
on all authentic Bann flags. HJ Bann flags contain enhanced embroidery detail
eagles on two sides, with a specific unit designation scroll above the eagle. The
Sword is symbolic of Nationalism, and the Hammer of Socialism. The hammer
and sword was used extensively by the Hitler Youth to symbolize their commitment
to National Socialism. There are a number of small period repairs, but the flag is
still very strong and bright with its original pole rings intact. Size: 67" long 50"
      high
      Condition: 7-8" $ 9,000
(below-2) showing correct woven zig-zag embroidery pattern.
      (below-3) listed gallery view summary.

          HJ vs DJ Bannfahnen ...

          Hello cobra-2001:
For more HJ Bannfahnen examples see WAF thread...
          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=215502
          See on page 2: HJBF #235(post17), 434(p19), 99(p20).
I prefer the white eagle on black field DJ Bannfahnen.
As the DJ eagle is embroidered into the background,
rather than done separate and then applique applied
onto the field as on the red/white/red HJ Bannfahnen.

          OFW
(below) Graphic of my DJ Bannfahnen, photo of same is included
in Littlejohn's "Foreign Legions Of The Third Reich" book series, see...
          http://www.amazon.com/Foreign-Legions-Third-Reich-Lithuania/dp/091213836X

PS/ IMO the HJ/DJ Bannfahnen are rarer than Luft or Heer
flags and standards, as in my over 40 years of collecting
flags I've only seen ~7 flying eagle type HJ/DJ Bannfahnen -
4 HJ and 3 DJ, all of them being of RZM spec embroidery. Four
of the flags are NSDAP Ausland Organizations, likely captured
at the OA-HQ in Stutgart at the end of WW2. For more in-depth
information on OA DJ Bannfahnen, I refer you to my article in the
Bender Military Advisor magazine (Winter 1994/95 Vol-6, #1 issue).

              d-h-f:
Interesting to note that these ~$10 flags are based
on the HJ Bann number found in the Organisationsbuch
der NSDAP, the 7th ed, table 54, on facing pg 442.

Hi guys, I was offered a similar flag to the one that started the thread.
What's a fair value these days for a Bann like this?
                Thanks in advance.

Nice Bann-flag. I like the embroidery.
After years it turns out there are more of them around as one would think!

I observed by hand the Bann-flag for 426 and the Jungbann-flag 916 from a friend.
These flags are quite heavy in contray to a Gefolgschafts-flag.
Both mentioned flags are shown in my gorget-book, published in Germany in 2012
in the chapter about HJ gorgets and related to the worn patch(es) for flag bearers.

Wow! What would a complete flag, finial and pole be worth? Of the few flags that are known, are any for sale?....cheers

A couple of years ago I was offered the Jungbannfahne of Jungbann 1/201 Berlin Moabit. Asking price was in the $6000 range. A historical flag from a unit named after a martyr. Alas I had to pass as it was beyond my means at the time.

Herbert Norkus is the name. Died in 1932 as a 15 year old. "Der Hitlerjunge Quex" is supposedly based on his short life story.
