Little banner with a cool story

I thought some of you would like to see this flag with a potentially interesting background. This flag was likely given by Hitler to Helen Stevens personally, although there is no hard evidence to prove it.

Stevens was a gold medalist (runner) in the 1936 Olympics for the USA. She also was accused of being a man during that contest by rival athlete Stella Walsh (running for Poland). Thus began the Olympic practice of physically “gender checking” female athletes, finally overturned in 2000. They didn’t check Stella however and ironically Walsh herself was a hermaphrodite (which was only discovered during an autopsy many years later.) Helen turned out to be all girl though.

Although Helen was a rural Missouri farm girl (she trained by running along side a horse and hanging onto its stirrups when going to school) she must have looked like a pure Nordic maiden because Hitler was smitten. Of all the US athletes only Stevens was invited for a private audience. (Remember there was a lot of flak about the Jesse Owens slight.) According to Stevens in her book, Hitler got a little "too friendly" (according to her he grabbed her fanny) but she offered him “a good ole Missouri handshake” instead. She said he invited her to stay in Germany for an extended visit at his expense. Little did Adolf, or indeed many others at that time, know but Helen was in fact a closeted lesbian. She declined his offer but Hitler sent her letters and gifts including two trees that were planted at her old college Alma Mater. (According to the papers they cut those trees down later but that is debatable—probably didn’t want neo-Nazis hanging around)

Stevens became successful later in life and donated a sizable sum to her old school along with a couple of boxes of letters and gifts from Hitler. Like most institutions of higher learning her school was run by politically correct morons. They were offended by this “Nazi stuff” but didn’t want to offend this wealthy alumni donor. So instead of giving these items to a legitimate museum they stuck the boxes of personal items in a locked closet. Right after she died (in the early 90s) the janitors were then ordered during the night to throw out all the "politically incorrect" boxes. The supervisor went back and retrieved at least one box (maybe two) from the trash and stashed it (them) in his pickup. Another janitor was riding with the supervisor and asked for something out of the box. The supervisor said “put your hand in and grab something.” The second janitor pulled out this flag. My friend lived not too far from the where this occurred and that very evening the janitor came calling as he knew my friend liked that “Nazi stuff”. He talked the man out of the flag. (I think he gave all of $5 for it.) I then talked my friend out of this same flag not long after.

The janitor said he would talk to the supervisor about selling the contents of the box but he never came back and is now deceased. According to my friend the supervisor is also deceased – he never could track down the items as the supervisor’s widow moved away – I believe out of state. What happened to the other stuff in the box is a mystery. Flea market? Pawn Shop? Trash? Who Knows?

The only markings on the little banner are bevo and Ges. Gech. on the back.

Dora Ratjen (an "actual" man who ran for Germany pretending to be female -- don't think he was checked) I don't know who's "hotter" Stella or Dora

            36 Olympians

            AWESOME story!

Did you ever think of conatcting this fellow?

            http://www.louiezamperini.com/

He is a fellow Olympian from '36 (and a genuine great guy as well!) . . . maybe he would find this interesting, and could tell you even more interesting tales from that moment in time?

I teach history classes in high school and college. I iked his recent biography Unbroken so much I used it in my WWII class this year. We listened to the audio book while reading the hard print copy -- all in class. Yery good story. I never thought of contacting him though. It might be hard to find his contact info but for sure he was on the same ship as Stephens.

In his book Louis tells of getting his own Nazi flag during the Olympics (and he almost got in trouble) Also Hitler shook Louis' hand in honor of his amazing last lap.

I don't doubt the story, but the item here reminds me of a type of armband stitched shut, and a cord added with something in the corded end to hold the cord so it doubled as a wall flag souvenir. Man who knows what was in the boxes they didnt get to see. Wouldn't it be wierd if it were hitlers actual armband he wore at the olympics one day, and had tailors altered it as a souvenir for her, he, ahem?? Very nice item with lots of history , hope you exhaust all the loose ends before you give up. I want to believe it really was one of hitlers armbands, maybe worn on a day when she won as the thread all match.

That is a lot of story for this piece, I guess the scariest part was that Hitler with all his intuition and judgements in the early years could not tell that is a lesbian. Rest of it sounds plausible.

Neat piece and certainly original from here and appears to be a table flag of sorts, maybe from an armband.

                  Very nice,

                  Kris

Thanks all -- It might indeed be an armband -- I never thought of that but that would totally make sense. I know the story is a "little out there" and without further proof the item is what it is and that's all. You all could have been brutal in reading this story but you were very gentlemenly in your responses. I would understand skepticism though. If the armband had been Hitler's he was wearing a very common armband.

For me though there is a ring of truth to the story. First of all I don't believe the guy I trade with is lying at all. I've known him too long and can read him pretty good. Also I saw this little piece right after he got it and it took me a few years to get it. He didn't ask me a lot for it but he really liked this piece which is typical of unique pieces he gets.

Also, you fellows who have done a lot of trading/ buying from good ole boys know that this is pretty unusual story for a janitor (and the town is too small to get away with not being a janitor and pretending you are one) to make up for $5. Now if I had been at a gun show and a table exibiter had told me this I would have laughed so hard it would hurt.

Who knows? What I do know is I'd never get over $50 for this but the story is pretty cool so I'll probably keep it.

Thanks again for the armband info. I'll be comparing it today to an armband.

                      Hi,

Can you show the bevo and ges. gesch markings to the rear?. Sounds like one of those stories that has rolled for some time and interesting.

                      Best,

                      Kris
