    Vet Bring-Back Flag Cut-Out

Here is a piece that has been in the dark and dusty recesses of my storage box for years......... I have no idea what the history behind it is, or who brought it back. Back when I was a kid and just starting to collect, this was given to me by a friend and told that a relative had brought it back from Germany as a souvenir from WW2. The cut-out is two sided, with a white circle and swastika center sewn to both sides. One of the sides has been vandalized with a bit of ballpoint pen ink, prior to the time I received it. Not a fantastic piece, but interesting just the same. You can get the scale by comparing to the bricks in the background. With that said, here are the photos...........

    Hello Ms:
Indeed interesting, something about GI cut
flag pieces. Reminds me of the "Magic Christian"
movie, about collecting cut from painting noses.
Some of my favorites are pieces cut from unit flags.

Here's one that I just listed. It's 35" across and comes from a HJ banner or flag. The soldier was real careful when he removed it. He must have had a stitch ripper.

What GI's did to bring home things makes for
lots of interesting and varied stories. A fascist
metal standard I have was broken into pieces
on a Rome building corner to fit into a duffel bag.
I've never covered up the break repairs he did
stateside, as that is now part of it's WW2 history.

(below center) WW2 GI Rome broke & repaired "real" standard.

Back in the 60s I remember a guy with a flag with the center cut out, like yours, except he had the red portion. His father had brought it back, with a few other items, from Europe after the war. In the 50s his father had his wife cut out the swastika center so he could put his head through the red body of the flag and wear it like a poncho when he went deer hunting. Maybe the rest of your flag ended up on another hunter!
