    Police Pennant Dud or good

    Hello all,
Well this arrived today and I had a good laugh and then thought that it may actually be a good one.
Any opinions good or bad would be appreciated
The pennant measures 11 inches long by 8 inches high.
The eagle that looks like a sunbed guard is printed in silver.
A burn test indicated that it is cotton or linen
    Many thanks

    Hello Doug:
If the police eagle was chained stitched like that I could
believe it. But not as a screen printed rendition where legs,
leaves, swastika orientation, and eagle placement are all so
poorly done. Others who collect pennants may say different.

      Thank you OFW

There is a story behind this pennant and I was hoping that someone had seen it before and could say whether it was either a good mass produced item or a poorly made reproduction.
My gut feeling with the smell, the brass rings and the consistent stitching that this is a good period item....following pictures show the 'banner' that this piece was central to:

First up the mini SS flag

The sizes of all the following flags is 6 1/2 inches long by 4 1/2 inces wide

      Bets regards

Next the Standard NSDAP...please note these are all single sided
The brass rings are all one piece with no indication of a join:

These were all linked together with a linen thread and have been hung for at least 40 years as one strand to my knowledge

                Doug:
Interesting set of small flags, may indeed be hall use decor.
Which is out of my mainly trooped unit flag collecting area.
Likewise, rings IMO imply more than string joined decor use.
RSF eagle reminds me of circa 1970's Japanese made type,
and the RKF is the 1939 pattern, so later than 1935 catalog.

                  Hello OFW,
Thanks for that fairly comprehensive reply. These little fellows do have me intrigued.

When I bought them there was no pretence to allude them to anything other than a small stringed set of German design flags.

I am happy enough to keep them in my collection.

I have never seen any others like them but I am absolutely new to collecting flags. I have scoured the internet to see if I can find anything similar but have found absolutely nothing.

As you mention the rings are in good condition and do look like period suspension rings found on a lot of the smaller vehicle pennants.

In the first 2 pictures you can see the linen string that tied all these together. I have removed this now so that I can put the flags in a small ziplock bag for storage. I do think as you suggest that the stringing together was carried out at a later stage

Perhaps I will never know their real history

                  All the best
                  Doug

                    Hello,

As a police collector I can offer that the eagle on that first flag is NOTHING like ANY representation of a police eagle that I have ever seen either on an embroidered item or printed. The design is totally contrary to the standardized pattern of 1936.

The swastika should be surrounded by a wreath, the wings should have 6 feathers, as well as other design features seen on all police eagles of the period. Those human looking legs on that bird are also pretty odd. Old Himmler would definitely NOT approve of this.

I cannot comment about authenticity as a civilian decoration, but I would assume that the maker would have used the readily available pattern to make these, and this is not even close.

At first I was taken aback when I first viewed the police pennant at the beginning of this thread. I was doubtful of the eagle as Bill pointed out above. But the entire design of the pennant was remarkably similar to the lowest level vehicle identity flag of the Order Police. I checked my article for particulars. And it is a bit smaller in size and is edged only once in green instead of twice. Amazing how the authorities came up with such a similar design for some celebration like Tag der Deutschen Polizei.

As I've mentioned in other posts, we tend to want to see text book items and, due to the vaste array of fakes, view anything out of the ordinary as fake.

But there were lots of items like these cheaply produced flags that were more or less sanctioned and intended for use as decoration for a one-time event or otherwise limited use. As has been pointed out and documented, these were commercially available. I could easily see a Tag der Polizei use for the pennant.
