Is this flag original? Help please...

Well, I finally got some views of the very large flag I started a thread on last week. I started a new thread as not to confuse anyone that saw my last thread that had no photos attached.

I'm actually a little confused about the material used in it's construction. I could swear that it's wool because it feels like wool. It has a tight weave like cotton linen but still feels like fine wool. Maybe the photos will help. On linen flags the seperating line between one color and another is very distinct. This flag's colors have been dyed also, but show a little 'blur' really close up. I think this is due to the woolen material.

Please take a look at it, it's markings, reenforced stitcking on the bunting and trailing edge, the rope, and let me know your evaluation. I'm wanting to buy this piece so I would really appreciate a value on it also.

    Thank you in advance,

    Robert

That's not wool -- but it is the correct material for a Kriegs flag. I believe it is a cotton-linen blend.

The markings look good. The rope is OK -- it is normal to see a loop on the top end and unlooped rope on the bottom on a flag of this size. Loops on both ends are usually only on small flags.

The only thing that is unusual is the small amount of reinforcement stitching on the end and around the rope attachments. I believe you already mentioned this. I have a kriegs flag this same size, and it has 8 rows of stitching on the end.

This flag looks unused, so it may be a late-war flag and they were cutting corners.

These flags are usually in the $400 - $500 range.

                          Thanks Curt,

I've been searching the flag forum for the last half hour trying to find a Kriegsmarine flag with the wings the same length as mine. What do you think of the long wings, and the reenforcing stitches on the rope loop on top?

I found it's twin on the forum search. What a useful tool to have for reference. Here's a photo or two to compare:
