    Small HJ banner on e-stand

    Hi all,
I'm not up on HJ banners and was wondering what everyone thought. The material and the white background. Does it all look okay? I'm used to a cotton material and this looks different, plus how the swas is put together. http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=168098
    Thanks for you thoughts.

I'd be curious about whether or not any of the white portions react to UV. I agree, this flag doesn't match any that I've seen in style or materials.

Come on guys. No one else has anything to say? Eric, I was thinking the same thing about the white myself. Almost looks to white.

          Just thinking out loud here....
I agree about the nylon look to the fringe. I don't know, The white material seems to have the same texture that is used on the white circle portion of high quality armbands, but the Bann # that is chain stitched looks crude compared to the rest of the flag. This could be as it was not there when the banner was produced but added by the unit upon recipt. I hope I am wrong, but my gut just tells me NO.

I have to agree with being suspicious. This could very well be a "homemade" unit flag. But the materials that this textile is constructed of is very disturbing.Other points already made are a concern as well.

              Hello All,
No problem discussing the banner, that is why were here.
I think I should add to this discussion since I have the banner in my possession.
I agree the white looks very bright and dont know what to say to that other than the banner is in near mint condition and it is possible that it has been cleaned somewhere along the line.
I have gone through this banner and can say with confidence there is not a single synthetic thread on it. I did not determine this by using a black light even though that is a tool I use on ocasion, but rather by burn testing every stitch on it.
I think it is important for novice collectors to know black lights are great tools but very easy to misuse.
The important thing here is construction and types of material used, in my opinion both the materials and construction are exactly what I like to see.
I agree the chain stitching is not the greatest I have seen, but that does not bother me one bit.
The rest of the banner material and construction is top shelf quality.
If there is something "concrete" wrong with the banner please feel free to point it out, were all learning here.
              Thanks
              Eddie

                Hello Eddie,
I'd be curious to know if the white ribbed fabric reacts to UV--do you have a UV light? My specific concerns--
                1. The red fabric looks like felt rather than cotton or Fahnentuch
                2. The white ribbed fabric is not one normally used for HJ flags or standards
                3. The unit patches on HJ/DJ/BdM/JM/NSDAP/SA/NSBO/NSAG/ etc. flags are always made of woven wool or worsted wool--I've never seen one on this ribbed fabric
                4. The odd way the white ribbed fabric is used with extra pieces on the border of the center stripe, as though the initial piece was too narrow, is unusual and does not appear a period style of construction.
                5. The fringe in white--this might be rayon but again I would be interested to know if it reacts to UV and whether the material used in its construction was burn tested.

                  Hello Erich,
I have burn tested all the areas you have concerns with and everything burns away to nothing, no balling, clumping or residue left behind.
Its not even Rayon, which is what I expected it to be when I first saw this banner and how bright it was.
It may be polished cotton, but nothing on this banner is synthetic.
I conceed it would be possible to make this banner post war, but none of the materials are synthetic and the quality is there.
                  Eddie
