Iron folds out of flags ???

Hi I did a search about ironing flags but only got a couple of hits. I just received this banner and would like to iron out the fold marks on it. Any help would be appreciated. To do or not to do. Thank you.

    Depends on the material really.

Some flags you're better off just hanging, or framing it and letting time do its thing, some you can put an iron to directly (very very carefully)

If you insist on ironing, I would suggest putting a towel over it, and doing it small sections at a time.

Having more flags and banners than most hotels have linen.... LOL.... I do mine when I do my laundry.

I'm pretty sure, and my experience over the years bears this out.... if a $20 shirt from Walmart can take an "ironing"... a quality made flag or banner of like (often better) material that was made to last... can take it too. And no... 70 years is not old at all for these kinds of fabrics.

To that end, I have NEVER had an issue or damaged anything doing the way you see it in the photo; and I've ironed delicate silk hankies from the 1920s which were souvenirs bought on board ocean liners. Just be wary of the heat setting of the iron versus fabric material. For typical flags and banners I use "Cotton" setting, straight on the flag. I guess you could do this over a thin tea towel if you want, which I could suggest for practise.

One thing to DEFINITELY MAKE SURE OF.... and that is.... your iron is CLEAN and with NO residue on the heated surface or you risk transferring that to the fabric. I actually bought a new iron specifically for flags and banners etc. And if you want to added extra perk to the piece... spritz a little SPRAY STARCH. And don't let people scare you about this process. Fabric starch has been around and in use on fabrics since the 1400s, and if you don't think these flags and banners were often ironed and made crisp for hanging display before ceremonies and celebrations.... you're kidding yourself. They can take it!!!

Thank you very much for the great information. I will get a new iron just for my flags. Think I will try to iron them. Flags is what I collect and OFW helped me a lot with my collection.Saved many $$$$ with Ben’s help.
Thank you again for the info I surely appreciate it. Ron
