All I’ve been told is that this is a rebuild during the war from a SS waffenmeister on the eastern front and that the bolt is not original to this “build” opinions.

Well, you don’t show the bolt so hard to give an opinion on that. The barreled receiver is a legit ss depot built gun. This is a well known one that’s been passed through quite a few hands... it’s a Russian capture that’s been “restored”.

The font on the receiver looked quite odd, but the 1 on the right side clearly identifies the receiver being of Astrawerke manufacture which used a different font. An uncommon variant. The magazine guard is formerly bnz43 Single Rune contract, one of the early ones where the magazine guard as well carried a Single Rune. The SSZZA4 is an SS Depot acceptance stamp and means rebuild by the SS. It can be found on many different codes, but often is faked. It however could be legit to this rifle.

The whole rifle appears to be refinished and mixmaster of parts. I would not outrule it being a former Russian Capture rifle, but it nevertheless from the first view appears to once had been an original SS rifle. But not built by a Waffenmeister, whoever told you this does not know much on SS rifles.

Edit: I would suggest you to post this rifle with much more pictures on k98kforum.com. The real K98k experts there could surely tell you more on it than I can.
