K98 marking...

The stock appears to be solid walnut. I agree the barrel markings are typical for dot of that period. The initials are for the supplier of either the barrel or the steel.

The BJ is the lot code. The little asterisk a live the shield is a rejection marking showing the barrel failed some test or inspection at one point. The dot in the shield indicates the finisher. Brunn in this case.

Many if not most dot code 43-44 98k I have seen have the asterisk. Often attributed as a “reject” mark, many parts from many firearms types and makers bear this stamp routinely. My point is it may indicate some further work or inspection is required but does not indicate the part is not fully usable and meets standard.

Appears to have rough tooling, so perhaps was deemed subpar cosmetic wise?.....Waffen Brunn (dot) would go on through 1944-45 manufacturing almost 1 million K98k rifles, making them quite common....Bodes
