    FG42 Handguard - Original?

A friend of mine got this FG42 handguard from the estate of a gunsmith in Styria. Is this handguard original? If yes, what value does it have? Thanks in advance!

Not having it 'in hand' is always challenging, but the fact it is bare wood (no varnish, oiled finish) makes me think it is a post-war made-up piece, that being said the metal strengthening/insulation inserts may suggest otherwise as it looks to be a well made item.

I believe it to be a copy. There are/were many people that made reproduction accessories for actual FG-42s. I would maybe post it on the K98 forum. There are members over there that actually own these rifles and maybe you would get some more replies. Good luck!

It’s original in my opinion. Looks exactly like the originals I’ve handled. G-type (second model)

It would be appreciated if you could not reply with your believe, but give reasons. What makes you think it is a copy and have you ever handled an original to dare to call it a copy? I did only handle two FG42 so far, therefore I don‘t feel enough educated to evaluate this handguard. I had hoped someone in here would give a well researched answer and not hear what one might believe.

I'm very surprised that you have not received more responses. Typically, any time "FG42" is mentioned on this forum, folks pile on with all sorts of comments (many that helpful, some not so much).

I have a local friend who owns a so-called "2nd Model" FG42 with a wooden hand guard like yours; he occasionally participates on this forum. I will reach out to him directly and see if we can get him to post here and offer some analysis.

No new PM with me. Are you sure you had sent it to the right person?

Almost - identical to how mine was when I first bought it from a member on this site.
The drying is absolutely and 100% consistent with an original IMO.

Based on these photos I wouldn't hesitate to say it was an authentic late war G-type guard.
Consistent with the half dozen others I have handled and p-hotographed around the world. The deactivated one at Bapty and Co in the UK is also dry like this, that one can be seen on Forgotten Weapons.

I judiciously applied some wood preserver on mine as I wanted it to last, but both front and rear stocks were dried in an almost identical manner.

You can see the similar wood finish here - this has a very small amount of preserver applied.

As an owner of an original, live "G" FG42 and having handled quite a few and reactivated two I believe the foregrip is original. It is not an easy part to duplicate accurately and for the time and effort the market is very, very small.
Condition is compromised so that affects value, so it might not bring the top dollars. I would recommend putting it into one of the auctions, Morphys is my preference as the exposure is exceptional and FG parts bring high dollar.
Recent RIA auction of an original G model bayonet raised $3500 hammer price. FWIW

Still no PM from docmaster1, well he must have his reasons.

Pitfighter and bmg17a1 thank you for your evaluations. It isn't mine, so I have wondered how much I should offer the owner for the handguard what would be a fair price for both him and me?

It all depends on what you need it for:

                          1. If you have an original parts kit missing the guard, then I would go big, you may not find another.

                          2. If you're buying to sell it and make a profit re selling, I will say move cautiously - the market is quite small - I know from experience.

                          3. If you're simply buying it to collect - then only you can decide how much you can afford.

                          At a guess, $500 to $1000 -

But, look at the thread and see how many "experts" (experts who admit they have never held examined or read a book on an FG42, I love them all.) said it was a fake a reproduction, imagine how much fun that will be when you come to sell it, lol.
