Real barn Find K98 marked 1944

Hi guys. Absolutely not my field so i am asking you: this K98 is a real barn find from bavaria in rough condition. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Nice condition as for a relic. It is one of the most common code byf44 by Mauser.
I wouldn't attempt to clean or restore it. Just leave it as it is and as found. Since you know where it was found you potentially can get a little bit more information about its history.

It looks like somebody, at some point in time, tried to restore butt stock.

There is a WWII photo of a U.S. GI breaking the stock off K98k Mauser by holding the barrel end and hitting a tree with the stock.

The pattern of oxidation is not appropriate for air exposure, this kind of large flake oxidation only occurs in deep water environments. I agree with nigromontanus, this was Lake-found.

Thanks for your help. Came together with a helmet that i posted in the John Burnett Helmet forum. Maybe you guys are right. Look at the tag inside .

The tag says: found by Mr. Rolllwagen in a rain retention basin in Herbrechtingen (Baden Württemberg) in 1992.

So possibly he found it together with the helmet inside the basin.

Unfortunately the rifle was way more expensive with 40 Euro [emoji38]
