Some observations: the stud or shank has never been installed; the waffen is very small and lightly struck and appears to me to be genuine, as I have not seen a repro of the very small waffens used kn the MPs and parts such as these; it is a single “dot” part compared to the double dot parts also used which included at white dot for “safe”. The shanks often come loose from the bolts to the point where the whole assembly flies off the bolt. Routinely, I repair half a dozen loose MP40 cocking handles every year with a couple in the shop for repair at the moment. They are “riveted” to the bolt which was accomplished at the factory puttig the rivet tooll through the large hole on the opposite side of the handle. Repair method is to remove the slide, ball bearing, and spring and weld the formerly riveted boss on the inside into the bolt. Red or both dots are repainted, any cracks in the slide, which alos occur, are welded, and finished. Slide reassembled and retaining rivet set.
These shanks are available in original, used condition and repros have been made. Repro slides also have been made and are currently available from several sources.

As I noted in my post, it appears to me to be genuine WWII since the waffen appears to be genuine. So far none of the very small waffens have shown up as reproduction steel stamps, but there may be one out there. The only issue I have is that I can recall only seeing one of these cocking handle shanks marked with a waffen, but it was on a repair years ago and not in my possession so I can’t be sure. Also, I can’t understand making repros or fakes of such an item which have so little value. If it is a reproduction it is excellent and very worthy of being used for repairs.

There’s really no logical way to determine which makers used two dot handles, or if all did, if two dots were used and then switched to one dot. I have an MP38 with a one dot handle converted on a matching bolt and there is no evidence that the handle is not the original conversion. I just repaired a two dot handle but don’t know the maker or vintage of the gun since I only had the bolt. The majority of the MP40s that come to my shop for any reason and bolts for repair have one dot handles. FWIWComment
