    MP 40 sling

    Hi Guys.

Was the sling always on the same side of the weapon?

I have seen pictures, not necessarily wartime, showing it on either side. Was it personnel preference or left, right handed?

    Thanks

Good question...mine is left side mounted but there are many wartime photos with the sling on the right side. I think it was to each his own. The bracket is easily moved to either position.

Probably depends on where the cocking handle is likely to dig into your flesh when the handle is on the inside of the the carry and whether that is annoying and uncomfortable. With the sling on the right side of the receiver, the cocking handle is on the outside.
Check out www.bergflak.com for official and unofficial observations on placement.

Surely the correct placement is with the sling on the right-hand side to avoid the cocking handle digging into the bearer.

The sling swivel has rounded lugs corresponding to similarly-shaped notches in the receiver and is locked in place with a thin washer punched into slots each side of it which also prevents the barrel nut from loosening. This has to be loosened and the barrel nut unscrewed sufficiently to allow reversal of the sling swivel - so not an easy job without tools.

Those MP40's with the sling on the left-hand side have probably been reassembled incorrectly after refurbishing or deactivation.

        Regards,

The sling mounted on the left side also gets in the way when cocking the bolt and grabbing the mag release button to change mags. I was at the range with my MP40 yesterday and by the time i left i was frustrated with that sling on the left side.

Sadly that's a problem we won't have to cope with over here!
