    German Sniper's

What was the preferred rifle used by Wehrmacht snipers? Was it the 98k or were there others. Also any information on the type of optics and mounts.

    The K98

The preferred sniper weapon was the bolt action k98. Most serious snipers still use bolt actions today, ie the Remington 700 PSS and its variants.

As far as optics go, there were a mind numbing number of different variations used, many of which were sporting optics used for hunting.

If you want to know more, get a copy of Senichs (sp?) book, "The German Sniper", it will answer pretty much any question you have on German snipers, WWI and WWII.

    Hope this helps,
    Dave

Hi, Daves answer sums it up. But the G43 semi auto was also used as a sniper rifle.
      Cheers, Ade.

The K43 was used by some, but most snipers did not like or use them. They were unreliable and not accurate enough. From what I have found the best of the 98K snipers was the High Turret as far as the best of the 98 designs go.

          German Snipers!

Basically the German Snipers' used what ever sniper rifle they could get thier hands on! The K98 was by far the most numerous! However, they did use the K/G3, Stg44, G98, VZ24, Tokerov TT33, Nagant M39, as well as a few sporting rifles types.
Scopes were also just as varied.

US snipers today use the Armalite, and also the Barret. Both are long range .50 cal bolt actions that pack quite a punch!

Tankdriver is right. I read an interview from a vet. saying he preferred like other fellow snipers the 98K for his accurancy more than the G43.

              Bolt actions are still preferred....

The preference for the k98 bolt isnt a WWII oddity, most professional snipers still use one. Most police SWAT teams favor the Remington 700 bolt action, usually in the .308 PSS form.

The accuracy and reliability you lose by incorporating a semiautomatic gas system into a sniper rifle has yet to outweigh the advantages of semiautomatic fire.

Unless you are shooting at Helen Keller (or you are a nut case in a book depository/bell tower), chances are you are only going to get one shot. The other 19 rounds sitting in the magazine are just adding weight.

              IMHO,
              Dave

Hi Matt, I know that German snipers were good, but not that good, the Tokarev TT33 was a pistol! (I know that you meant to write Tokarev SVT40)
                Cheers, Ade

Your Right I can't believe I wrote that! . Yes, I did mean the SVT40. Nice sniper rifle to have by the way!

The Germans did use the TT33 a quite a bit though! In fact I got one from an American Vet that removed it from a German POW in France!

Another is stealth, you may not want a brass colored round flying through the air and making noise after you fire.

                      German Sniper

Where would you find a scope and mount that would get you as close as possible to an original W.W.2 German sniper setup for a 98-K ?

Get ready to pony up a bunch of bucks...

You can find them if you REALLY know what you are looking for on both Ebay and Ebay Germany. The real ones are VERY expense. Even the reproduction high mounts sell for hundreds of dollars. You need to spend some time figuring out what you want first. Invest in Senich's book, "The German Sniper." He covers scopes and mounts in detail.

                        Good Luck,

Bolt actions are preferred by snipers then and now. Less movement within the rifle the better and automatic loaders or bolt blowbacks keep the rifle moving.

Anyone ever hear of a German sniper by the name of Unertal? I'm not sure on the spelling. Those scopes were big back in the '60's.
