    No4 Mk1 T Sniper Rifle - opinions sought

    Hello I'm after opinions about this No4 Mk1 T Sniper Rifle.

    The seller says it's an original rifle built in ww2.

    "British No Mk I T WW2 manufactured sniper rifle fitted with No32 Mk 1 scope complete with original eye shade. Rifle manufactured by BSA in 1943. Comes with scope can, sight adjusting tool and leather scope cover. Rifle has seen service and visited the armourer a few times. Finish to metal work thinning, some dings and marks to the woodwork, bore dull. Overall good condition for age".

          It is an original sniper rifle, but butt stock has been matched to the rifle not ex factory. And S51 marking is not original, wrong font and size. Therefore I believe a rebuild rifle someone matched himself. A No. 32 Mk.I is not correct for a 1943 BSA rifle, at least to my knowledge.

            Bolt has a serial number.....rifle it appears not.......scrubbed??

            It may be the shine but I cannot see a "T" designator.

            Close in shot of the markings left and right of the cocking piece would be nice.

              Doesn't the "TR" on the left side of the band indicate "Telescopic Rifle"? I agree the scope serial number on the stock, and the "S51" are bogus. I don't see any number on the mount.

              1941 dated scope is unique.

                Hi,

                The "TR" designation is the rifle has been selected at the factory for above average accuracy and would be set aside for conversion.

                Once converted fully a number of checks would be made and having passed it would receive its "T" designator as well as another proof stamp which is why I asked for the additional photo,s of the flats left and right of the cocking piece.

                I agree that the scope is authentic and not a copy and by the looks of it the mount is original (not all were marked with serial number)

                It would also be nice to see the internal face of the breech to see the fit and finish of the mounts in that region.

                No worries about the rifle designation "No4 Mk 1 " being very poor as the rifle has seen some use and the markings were very poor anyway being electro pencil.

                This "may be" a reserve rifle that was not fully matched with a scope although that I feel is a stretch as in 1943 why would you produce reserve kit when you needed as many as possible?

                    No probs Willi,

                    Nice scope on that one, the Mk3 was likely the best one produced. That one still has the markings "w" for waterproofed, and "B" for bloomed lenses, which I believe enhanced the low light gathering properties .

                    ( For waterproof...........read rain resistant, do not dunk it in a bucket of water !

                    Spot on "T" marking with the small droops on the end of the cross bar.
