    Japanese 7.7 question

Hello all first time posting in this forum. I have a jap 7.7 that I have owne for some time and I would love to get a little information on it. All the numbers match except the bayonet. The bore looks like it is chromed and is in very good condition it is complete less the dust cover, tripod and sling fixtures. The question I have is I would love to know when and what arsenal made this weapon. Any and all help would be appreceiated. Thanks. Mike

According to Honeycutt's book. It was manufactured at the Toriimatsu factory of the Nagoya Arsenal. Looks like a nice type 99. Can you post a pic of the whole gun?

Just saw your question about timeframe. I'm no expert on jap rifles but I believe the lack of a series Kana symbol preceeding the serial number denotes a series zero. That would make this one of the first type 99's in 1939 the first year of production.

Thanks Jack for the information! Here is the entire gun, if you want close ups let me know.. I guess being possibly in the first year of production would be a little on the rare side, especially with all numbers matching?

I don't know about rarity of the series. Each series had a run of 99,999 numbers, then they moved onto the next series. Does make sense though that more of the earlier ones would have been deployed and thus more of them lost or destroyed.

Does your still have the AA wings on the sight?

Jack, that does stand to reason especially since most japanese fought to the end... Yes mine still has the AA sights. Did you notice the mum wasn't ground just an x run thru it. So I guess it was a surrenderd weapon. Mike

Hey there Michael. According to your first pic, the Japanese (Chinese really) characters read: "nine nine type" or Type 99 in English.
