    P-38 CVQ C Prefix

I have seen the P-38 CVQ with the a and b prefix. And heard rumors that there were just a few made with a c prefix. Has anyone ever seen one?

kurt great website and loved seeing the grenztruppen stuff! have had personal contact with them boys...anyway a p38 i know nothing about but am willing to guess that the germans filled up every last serial number on the c block before they went onto the d block...sure an easy question for u p38 gurus...p38's collectors say they can buy em all day at a cheap price but when you try to sell one at a fair price no one buys it??? i am of course talking about 98% pieces.

I don't believe a c prefix gun has ever been found. The 0 and 00 guns seem to follow the b prefix.

In Warren Buxton's P.38 book, Vol. II he reports 3 cyqs with a "c" prefix. They all three have a 3 digit serial number. I spoke with Warren at the Tulsa Gun Show. He told me he had seen those guns years ago at the Columbus Gun Show. He told me that, more recently, one was reported as having been sold at a Houston gun show while he was there but he didn't actually get to see it.

The "b" prefix cyqs were quite scarce until the Russian imports came in. So, if you are considering purchasing a "b" prefix, be very cautious.

            Hi Jim,

There is a lot of talk among P.38 collectors that the "0" and "00" series cyqs were assembled at a different plant than the standard cyqs. One of the things that make us believe that may be the case is that, instead of using E/88 on the guns as an inspection stamp, the "0" and "00" guns have a "U".

It seems that all but one of the "00" series were captured by the Russians. Until the imports started coming in, there was only one "00" known and it was serial number "00100". Now there are 15 or so known.

            Regards, Leon

              Leon,

So, is there any speculation on where besides Spreewerk in Hradek nad Nisou? I would be interested in theories regarding the alternate location.

Also, I have heard that some pistols are marked "cvq", rather than "cyq", but there is debate over wether the "v" is the result of a damaged "y" in the "cyq" stamp. Your (or anyone's) thoughts?

              Jeff

                Hi Jeff,

I will respond to your alternate plant location question in a day or so. I need to see if I can find the info since I didn't write it down and I suffer from CRS.

The debate over the cyq vs. cvq will probably never end. My personal feeling is that it was the result of a broken die. A late war change from cyq to cvq just doesn't make sense to me because all other makers that had late war code changes moved way down the alphabet. svw, swp, pyy, sgx, rqs to name a few. Also, cvq was already assigned to a manufacturer of carts and vehicle bodies.

                Regards, Leon
