Old 1850 Dreyse Sömmerda

Very nice high quality single shot pistols. They look to be cartridge so my opinion is 1870-80's. My first thought was target pistols but the serial numbers are consecutive. They were probably a cased pair originally.
Being a matched pair of that period they may well have been dueling pistols.

They are interesting. I too have not been able to figure out what they are, but I agree they are later than 1850. Dreyse was quite the creative gun maker and the types seem to be endless. I was at the Dreyse museum in Sömmerda last December, for the second time, and do not recall such a pistol on display.

They are indeed a nice pair. They may well date from circa 1850, Dreyse did make some single shot needle pistol in the 1830 time period. The barrel's cannon muzzle is also indicative of the period. By 1860's and 70's, military and civilian use of single shot pistols were certainly well on the way out - the revolver was then king.

After many research I've find Dreyse like mine sold on Hermann Historica. Date indication is 1865.
