    Vampir night vision MP44 question...

There’s a lack of information out there for the night vision Zielgerat 1229 Vampir infrared scope that mounted on some late war MP44s. I’ve been building a working replica using the guts of cheap modern infrared scopes just for fun. Does anyone know what the reticle looked like? Was it the regular three bar German reticle like found on the ZF4 or something different?

Can't remember if the reticle is specifically mentioned in these articles and photos, but this is info that the brits filed on it during post-war testing.

This video should answer all your questions. Martin.

Edit: go to 0.45 in the video for the reticle.

Thank you for those links and th video. I wonder if the simple “through the lens shots” of the video are just for tv demonstration. With the links I see that “a graticule was used for aiming” when decribing the device mounted on the MG42. With that in mind and with a lack of other info I think I’m going to design a reticle based on the enigmatic BU ZF4 scope. The design will allow for a clearer image with less obstruction.

I doubt the reticle shot from that horrible video is what the actual ZG1229 reticle looked like.

The ZG1229 is a rare bird and the only intact (possibly functional) specimen is at the WTS Koblenz museum as far as I am aware.

A couple of years ago, a dug up ZG1229 was sold off (to a French national if memory serves) but there has been no luck in contacting the owner.
