I vote for gas mask canister strap. They did use them on the late war Sturm 44 assault guns.

Sorry but I think it is too short for a gas mask strap: 62 cm..

Looks like it has been cut down to fit. The one i have the ends are neatly sewn including the button holes. This one looks frayed.
