    US Military Shotguns

I have just watched 'The wild bunch' as I am doing some 'research' ( )uhaumm-ok not the best place but entertaining) on the 'Punitive campaign.'
My question is what was the shotguns that they were using in the film?

Ok I know they were probably wrong/later model in the film, but what was the military issue shotgun of that period and up to the 1st World War?
I seem to remember that Colt made a lever action? Did they make a pump? Did Remington make military issue pumps?

Your knowledge and any pics would be much appreciated.

What's a Model 1897 shotgun with bayonet worth? I know someone who has one, and the bayonet is the long (17"?) variety dated 1917 and has the scabbard.

A question about the Winchester. Is it a solid frame? there are web sites if you look that will give serial number ranges of winchesters. I have one but the barrel was missing, replaced the barrel but can't get the head spacing right . also have the vented sleeve w/bayonet lug.

There have been Remington 870 used in the service but not with vented sleeve/lug

Ithaca made a riot/trench gun w/sleeve bayonet lug.

Model 1897 were good guns but the bolt had a tendency to kick back my father-in-law has a scar on his right cheek from that, he was lucky.

Have it checked out by a competent, key word, competent gunsmith not Joe Bubba down the street.

In a local pawnshop, I've found a Stevens Model 629 shotgun with US ordnance stamps on it. The asking price is $800.00. I'm not up to date on military shotguns, but I'm reluctant to pay that for one.

You can find a concise overview of the shotgun as used in WWI in Bruce Canfield's U.S. Infantry Weapons of the First World War. He devotes a chapter (pages 131 through 144) to the shotgun. Many pictures and information on markings, etc. I also seem to remember that there was a book written in the last several years dedicated to the military shotgun perhaps published by Collector Grade Publications?

Original examples are pricey. I looked for several years without finding one that I was confident in. Seems like they were asking over a $1,000 several years ago.

                Best Regards,

                Dave
