Did byf made MP40's ?

No, Mauser, Obendorf did not make the MP40.
The MP40 series of machine pistols was made by 3 makers;

- Erfurter Werkezeug und Maschinenfabrik (ERMA)
- Haenel (Hugo Schmiessers' factory, commonly called "Schmiesser")
- Steyr

I know fairly nothing about guns and makers but it was my understanding that ayf did made MP40's? The early one's?

Nick,

You're talking about two different manufacturers Nick. The code "byf" was assigned to Mauser, Obendorf. Mauser never made the MP40 or any of it's derivitives.

The code "ayf" was assigned to ERMA. They were a producer of the MP40.

The other two producers of the MP40 were
- C.G. Haenel, maker code-"fxo"
- Steyr, maker code- "bnz"

You must have confused the "byf" with "ayf", or perhaps just mis-typed it earlier.
Anyway, hope this clears things up for you.
