    FG-42 in Upcoming Auction

    Rock Island Auctions is offering a nice second model FG-42 in the next auction. I like the first model better, but have a feeling this seasons pattern will fetch a pretty good price.

    Investing in rare firearms seems to have paid off.

      Does anyone know what the last type E, or first model FG42, went for at auction? It seems like I've seen a few second model FG44s come up for sale the last few years and bring big bucks. I can't remember seeing any E type in the last 10 years or so. I would imagine the first model would bring more? Especially considering I heard that there's like twice as many second models in the NFA registry. Thanks

          A bit off tangent but here are two in the Waiouru Army Musuem New Zealand.

          From memory very low serial numbers but they remain a favourite exhibit of mine to see.

            Sorry maybe I don't see where it says its a dewat. You mean it's a transferable class 3 that is currently dewat ( by what means?) or a demilled rifle? Sorry if that info is in front of my face but I don't see it.
            Also does it say that both fg42s( E and G) are being auctioned together? This might be just a stupid post since it's 3:45am

              It may or may not be able to fire - it will still be listed as a registered Dewat, even if it can now fire.
              It just means that when it was registered and added to the NFA list, it was at that time a Dewat.

                The 1st model FG in the upcoming Julia auction is on consignment from a guy here in Mississippi (Tupelo, MS - birthplace of Elvis Presley). The consignor is the person who, as a young man on summer vacation with his parents, found the FG for $350 or so at an antique shop in New England. When I visited with the owner/consignor about 15 years ago, he told me the acquisition story and how he had to literally beg his parents for the money needed to buy the rifle; his parents said "no" at first, but eventually relented.

                I've not examined the gun in person; the owner/consignor just showed me photos and told me about it when I met him at a local gun show. I do, however, have a local friend with the interest and resources to enable him to purchase this FG at auction (and he is aware of the offering). So, who knows, maybe the FG will end up back here in Mississippi again?

                    The early gun at James Julia will not fire. It is clearly listed in the auction description as having the chamber welded up.
                    Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

                      I believe that the 1st model FG at auction is classified as "unserviceable" under the National Firearms Act of 1934. This legal status of often referred to by collectors as a "registered DEWAT" (the "DEWAT" acronym meaning "Deactivated War Trophy" and being a term of art under the NFA prior to the 1968 amendments to the statute).

                      The good news for the buyer is that, as an "unserviceable" NFA item, the transfer will be processed MUCH more quickly; the buyer should be able to obtain approval to take possession in about 4 months or so (versus the current 9 -10 months approval wait time for serviceable NFA items). Of course, should the new owner want to be able to reactivate the FG after it has been transferred to him as a "DEWAT", he can then file a BATFE Form 1 and obtain approval to do so (but the Form 1 approval process will take about 9 - 10 months).
