    M1A1 Carbine Help Please

A couple of weeks ago I posted a M1A1 stock, which turned out to be real, well just like buses another more complete example has now turned up!
I have been offered this 1944? inland.
Basically is this a legitimate M1A1 or just a put together using an original stock?

These are the only picture I have at the moment, so I hope they are of use.

    Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks
    David

Why with regards to the sight?

Flip sight stopped in late 43.

I was told the same on one I owned with a 4-44 barrel date just like this one.

                    That is incorrect.

                      original

so you have a second run gun in a first run stock? who knows- there are purists that say late 43 went to second run and should have low wood stock- could have been mated at arsenal, truth is no one really can say one way or the other, as long as stock is real and carbine is first or second run sequence, it COULD be original, but the purists will say no

The purists are often wrong. Not all parts were fitted according to manufacturing dates/specifications as outlined by the Ordnance Corps. In many cases parts were installed until depleted, often well beyond received improved replacement parts. Not all upgrades were preformed as specified by directives. I have seen several collectors replace original parts for upgraded parts and thereby over restoring an untouched original carbine. Very sad!

I also should add that there was a parts exchange program as well. When there was a shortage of parts at lets say IBM another manufacturer like Saginaw that had an overage of those same parts might ship a lot to keep IBM in continuous production. I have an IBM that the President of the Carbine Club told me was not correct because of a part not found on IBMs. After a little research I found that IBM was involved in parts exchanges for the exact part. But also under close examination I could tell that the part was never tampered with since day one, it had always been on my carbine. Glad I didn't listen to the advise of knowledge.

The transfer of parts from one Carbine manufacturer to another wasn't just to help the other manufacturer out. The manufacturers were in business to make money and giving their parts away or swapping parts wasn't part of it. The transfer of parts from one manufacturer to another was done by directive from Ordnance who handled the billing of those parts to keep the money straight.

All the Carbine manufacturers had contractors that made various parts for them, and in the case of Quality Hardware, received all their parts from either their contractors or other Carbine manufacturers. Even some of Quality Hardware's receivers came from the contractor, Union Switch & Signal, so their didn't manufacture a single part on some of their Carbines.

It was to keep production flowing, number one goal of the contracting agents working for the Defense Department.
