    Help with K98's

I am looking for a book, if available that covers technical information on the K98's, eg what models there were, differences between these, reading proof marks etc...

If anyone can help with some information or where to look it would be appreciated.

    Dear Sir,

The book you need is 'Backbone of the wehrmacht' by Richard Law.
    Its pretty damn good !

I would also go with that choice. You can find it at gun shows or militaria shows too. I belive you can order it from amazon.com, ebay, or web search. It is a great book and worth the money.

          What the others have said.........

Excellent book, gives you everything you need to know about the K.98 from 1934 to '45 and is full of great photo's.
There is also a 'Sniper Variations' volume published.

          Steve.

Just because it hasn't been said yet, I will warn that there are some inaccuracies in "Backbone of the Wehrmacht", and the second volume regarding snipers is more suspect, it is a 90% reference, and definitely the first place to go. The main issue with inaccuracy is the limited base of knowledghe regarding serial number ranges that were based on observed ranges at the time of publication, and ststed as such. "The German Sniper: 1914-1945" by Peter Senich is a great (I feel the best) reference for sniper rifles.

'BBOTW' is full of errors. For example every datasheet for Steyr (660/bnz) rifles is inaccurate. Thats a 100% inaccuracy rate in just one manufacturer. Directing a new collector to this as a credible reference is setting him up for some tough times. Do not use this book as a source for what is legitimate and what is not. Say bnz40 made out of a bnz41??

Buy the book but beware. You would do well to consult with the various 98 forums for basic information.

I agree with Jeff here. BBOTW does have errors. However, for a starter, it is still probably the best book on the K98 out there!

The sniper book though is totally another story! Laws' book on snipers is full of errors, and in many cases lacks complete or any specific information on many sniper varients. It can be very mis-leading, and will not give any concrete knowledge for purchasing a correct sniper rifle.

The sniper book by Peter Senich is the best one out there, and buries Laws' book by a mile! This is a tough book to find though these days.
If anyone has a copy they would like to sell, please PM me and let me know, as I do not have my own copy yet!

                Matt
