    Ithaca 1911a1 issued to IRS

Picked up an interesting textbook WWII Ithaca 1911a1 with a large gouge in frame from manufacturing process. It appears it never had any inspection marks and due to the imperfection was assigned to the IRS as that is the prefix to the serial number. Has anyone run into this before?

Pictures would be nice here in order to review and comment.

If it has no inspection or acceptance marks that is an indication it was never accepted by the government. Sounds more like a replacement serial number.

      Pictures?

Sounds more like it was supplied with a "IRS" added to the serial number for some reason. IRS issued serial numbers to register NFA weapons, MGs, etc, but an IRS issued serial for a pistol would be quite unusual. Certainly questionable why IRS would do that……..

That's what I thought but found it interesting, it had white grips that some goober used a marksalot to color black so I have to remove outline as they didn't bother to take them off first!

The receiver markings were not applied until after all machining operations were completed, so a manufacturing mistake seems unlikely. The right side receiver markings, including the No., were applied before finish, and the serial number was applied after finish. I can't see the crossed cannon acceptance mark on the right side, and assume the FJA acceptance mark is missing on the left side. Does it have the P proof in front of the rear sight, and near the magazine release on the left side?

Could possibly a receiver/slide stolen before being serial numbered that someone applied to the BATF for a serial number to make it legal.

Thanks guys that sounds reasonable, other than the markings in the photo the only other marking is the centering line for rear sight. Interesting history on this one probably!
