    G98 in Stalingrad?

This picture is always said to be in taken in Stalingrad. Is this soldier holding a g98? Did the Wehrmacht still use this weapon during Barbarossa?

    Thx!

    G-98

It looks to be a G-98 with the issue sling to me. I once worked with a fellow in Germany who was in Stalingrad with a Pionier unit and, though he didn't normally talk about it, he did on one occasion mention to me that he actually work a WW 1 style helmet and that his greatcoat was really thin. Never found out how he made it out but I assume he was wounded and evacuated.

Cant say that the picture is Stalingrad, I can say that g98,s did go into Russia during Barbarossa.

It is a misunderstanding to think that all german units were superbly equipped with the latest weapons. Many many support arms and units used the older equipment. If the picture is genuinely Stalingrad it is no real surprise to see as by the early stages never mind the late stages the infantry had taken tremendous losses with few replacements provided. By the end anyone who could stand were in the firing line.
