SA unit marked KKW training rifle.

This is on a Walther KKW SA (Sturmabteilung) training rifle. I have scoured the web without luck to find out what this mark means. Any help observations or outright guessing would be appriciated. I have posted this on a few other forums, with no definitave answer. The mark is on the butt plate.

Some contributors to Jon Speed's book occasionally visit Littman's .22 list. Perhaps they might recognize the mark. I did a quick check of the book and didn't find anything, though. Of course, as you know, the stock mark is the standard brown shirt mark found on many KKW's. I would be interested in seeing more pix if available.

How does one determine whether it is rack or unit? Is there a list of units somewhere? Were the units in the SA organization or other paramilitary groups? It appears from the photo that this mark is in the receiver/barrel or maybe buttplate. I have only seen about 35 KKWs, but so far the marks have only been in the stock. Did certain units 'prefer' marking in wood or metal?

Offhand, I would say the mark indicates the rifle was the property of Pioneer Sturm 10/ SA Standarte 6. I believe one of the Bender published books on the SA contained a list of the Standartes as well as an explanation of the unit numbering system. I haven't searched the web for this data as I have it in my library, as well as war time published data on the organization of the SA. A good library is an important tool in a collector's hobby. The web has its limitations. I don't think one can rely on the web for such research. I have recorded in my data base other trainers with SA cartouches indicating the Gruppe name, as well as others with unit markings such as yours.

That's a possibility--it's also possible that P 10 stands for the city/Sturm of Standarte 6, or it can be some other accounting system. Also possible--PI in group Ostland/Ostsee or something like that. I don't have a listing of a Pi Standarte 6 but it's tough to tell. It also could be a school marking, which might be more likely.
Nice! I have a KKW with SA cartouche but no unit markings, as I recall. These are pretty tough to find, especially in nice condition.

I think JoeW has it pretty much down, these marks are not that uncommon, I would think the 6 could also be a rifle # but ive seen them a bunch of different ways but most likely as stated above. I dont believe it to be a school marking.
