Please take another look at this holster

I recently posted this one for comments as I know nothing about holsters. There weren't many replies but the ones who did said it wasn't very valuable, $20 maybe. As a result I put it on the attic to give away free. I then get a few pm's telling me that in fact it's a rather rare ersatz holster.

Could I get some more opinions please? What pistol is it for? are the 1938, RZM and DDR stamps bogus as previously suggested? They don't seem to be and look to have been there a long time.

    Many thanks
    Ben
(Apologies to AndyD who I'd promised to give this to before I learnt that it could be a lot more valuable than I first thought)

      Ben,

As I said before, It looks like a holster for a Mauser 1934/HSc. Ersatz is just what its made of. It is a laminated vinyl or a sheet fiberboard covered with lacquered clother. The closure strap should still be leather though on this one!

The RZM markings are definately bogus! Only AKAH was authorized to produce holsters for the RZM. Also the date of 1938 would not fit this holster correctly. These Ersatz holsters are wartime (usually late wartime) produciton. These ersatz holsters are usually void of markings. If there are any, they will be on the tip of the closure strap. Judging by the stitching and quality of this one it looks to be 1943 or 1944 produciton.

So what you have is a Mauser 1934/Hsc ersatz holster with bogus markings.
I sold one of these just like this last year, and it was WaA marked on the strap. Had a very difficult time selling it, and I think it sold for $45 or so. Yours being defaced and lack of WAA markings would go for much less I'm afraid.

Ben, I said $25. I agree with Matt. You have an ersatz holster of unknown age or parentage. Show me evidence it dates to WWII. I think an unmarked ersatz holster, defaced with bogus attempts to make it something it isn't seriously detracts from the otherwise moderate value it may have. Proper markings signifying attribution to the military or police and dating the holster could change the value. Ask your PMers for an offer if they are interested.

Thank you both, I just wanted to double check I wasn't giving away something that was worth $200+ as suggested here and via pm:

            Ben,

The answer to your question is "Lobsters". I'll take the holster now, but I'm sticking to my guns on the value of it.

No way in hell this is a $200 holster! I had an extremely difficult time selling mine!! YES, it was listed here on the estand, with no bites on it at all! Robert, I gladly would have sold it to you for $200!!!
I finally posted it up for auction, and got about $45 I think. (can't recall exactly, but it wasn't much!)
And mine was in just as good of condition, without the bogus markings!

            Matt

PS-Robert, BTW- Awesome looking "little Mausers!"

I still say that prices vary from coast to coast, a good example would be Krag rifles and lever actions... they are less costly out here vice back east.

No matter the Value these holsters are not easy to find ( for me anyway ) and part of the reason is because they really were not made to last 60 years. I only have one and by God Matt you know Im swimming in Holsters ( My house is possesed by a the spirits of a herd of cattle ).

PS. By the way Matt... the holster I pictured I bought from some guy who didn't know what he had for $45.00LOL!
              Robert,

Well Robert, I knew what I had, and it still only sold for $45! I posted it up here on the estand, and nobody even emailed me about it! (including you! )
These ersatz holsters just aren't that desireable to collectors. I've had many, and sold them all. Every one was difficult to sell, and didn't get beans for any of them.
You are correct though, they definately weren't made to last this long, and usually are in poor shape. However, as you know I never get anything in poor shape, so trust me, all the ones I've had are as good as Bens' here or better!

If you would like more of these, let me know. I always seem to run into them.

Seems like I've stirred up a small hornets nest here..

Just for the record, the holster I have is made completely of ersatz expect for the strap which is leather. Robert, your one seems to have a leather mag pouch and belt loop yes?

Anyway, I think we've concluded that although quite rare, it's not that valuable and seeing as though it's not my area of collecting, I'll be glad to send it on to Andy who was the first to shout "Lobsters"!! Hopefully he can put it to good use.

                Cheers fellas.
